Superbly Creative!
Enter Sudhacars Museum and you would feel you have entered some weird place with full of cars, bikes and cycles in different sizes and shapes. These look really interesting! We wonder how one can climb into these cars.
The kids, especially, will be really excited to watch this collection. My experience has been incredible! I was pleasantly surprised and awed by these structures! All the models in this museum are simply superbly creative.
Sudha Cars Museum is the first and only handmade Wacky Car museum in the World. The short, simple and sweet Sudhakar says that he has been pursuing this hobby right from his school days. At the age of 14, he first designed a bicycle and the very next year, at the age of 15, he made his first Easy Rider Motorbike. When he was studying in Intermediate II year, he created a stunning, rugged looking Dune Buggy.
Sudhakar is into his family business of Printing and creation of these wacky cars is his hobby! He doesn’t spend much on making these cars… as they are all from recycled things.
Sudhakar had designed about more than 150 different types of cars till date, like Go Karts, other wacky cars like Brinjal Car, Shivlinga Car, Helmet Car, Double Bed Car, Shoe Car, Mug Car and the list is endless. He has made a beautiful Lotus-shaped car that he had gifted to Sri Satya Sai Baba (of Puttaparthi) on His 75th birthday.
He has designed over 30 different designs of bicycles from single seater to multi seaters and he has made the smallest bicycle in India, which is about 6 inches high. Adding to his collection are 12 different types of motorcycles.
For a Social Cause, Sudhakar designed a Condom Bike in the shape of a condom to bring in awareness towards AIDS. The Condom bike has a built- in player, which gives a brief history on condoms and AIDS awareness. Continuing to fight against the deadly AIDS, he is planning to start a Mini Condom Bike Race on Word AIDS Awareness Day very soon.
The unbelievable thing is that all these creations are made out of scrap (zinc sheets) and are workable and can be recycled. Sudhakar has given live demonstrations of these vehicles on the occasion of police traffic safety week celebrations at Tank Bund and Necklace Road at Hyderabad for five consecutive years.
Sudhakar has created a Guinness World Record for the Largest Tricycle in the World. The Tricycle is 41 feet 7 inches tall and weighs about 3 tons with the wheel diameter of 17 feet. It is 37 feet 4 inches long. It took him over 3 years to build this Giant Tricycle. This tricycle is on display in his museum.
The smallest double decker, which is also at display at the museum, has recorded in the Limca Book of Records and with the Guinness as well. Presently, the buses that he has made are being used for sight seeing in the city by private tourist centers.
Sudha Cars Museum is open on all days from 9.30am to 6.30pm (do check for the actual timings whenever you plan to visit).
What are his plans for the future? - to introduce a 13” motorbike circuit race on the lines of 18” motorbike circuit race in Japan. He is trying for the Guinness Book record again for the most number of wacky cars.
Currently, Sudhakar is planning to have an Animal Park, where he would have life size mechanized walking animals. He has already developed the prototypes of an Elephant and a Wild Boar. He proposes to have at least six animals to begin with in this motor animal park! “It’s going to be one of its kind in the world”, says Sudhakar. “I am almost through and would like to have a bear, turtle, and dog as well in this park. I plan to complete this by Dec, 2009”.
Some of the models being worked on are Fountain Pen Bike, Basket Ball Car, Tennis Ball Car, Ladies Hand Bag Car, Stiletto Car, Lipstick Bike, Pressure Cooker Car, Sofa Car, Book Car, Mobile Phone Car, 8-seater Dining Table Car, 7-seater Conference Motorcycle, Nizam Jewellery and General Jewellery Train of 12 bogies.
We need to see all these to believe the amount of creativity and effort that go into the making of these bikes, cars and all other models.
Sudhakar also plans to have a children series models – book/ pen/ pencil/ sharpener etc.
He was featured in Ripley’s AXN – Believe it or Not!
Tête-à-tête with Sudhakar:
I wondered how one can actually climb into these cars?!
“All these are as small as one can climb! The suspension, rock and pinion, steering headlight, indicators and all the features are like any other car. Every car has a different wheel placement, like a soccer ball car has six wheels and I place them in such a way that they spin at one place and move like any other”, Sudhakar quips in.
So, what is your target?
To make 100 wacky designs of all the models! By this year end, he plans to make at least ten models.
How did this interest develop in you?
“I visited the Henry Ford museum in 1991 and that triggered me into starting my own museum and I started this in 2000”.
How do you make these models?
“It’s all more of recycling! I pick up the junk of the vintage cars and engines from the junkyard and create a base. My models usually take about 10 days (min) – Cigarette Bike - to about 3 years (max) – the tallest tricycle - for making.
What are the difficulties that you face while making these?
“Every car is different and this in itself is a challenging task! I need to take care of the wheel placement and suspension. I enjoy designing the bicycles more”.
Any special memories…
“I made the Cricket Ball Car specially to cheer the Indian team for the 2003 World Cup with a tape briefing people on the cricket World Cup History and I made the Football Car was made to commemorate the 2006 FIFA Football World Cup held at Germany”.
Awards and recognitions…
“There have been plenty! I am a Guinness Book of World records Holder and I am a regular Limca Book of World Records holder. In fact, on the occasion of the 20 years of celebrating the Limca Book of Records, I have been chosen as one of the “People of the Year Award” in April, 2009. The ISRO chief, the IBN chief and Amitabh Bachchan gave away this award.
Your primary clientele…
“Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad – the mobile canteens, the make-up vans and the search engines there are all my designs. I have designed for private tourism vehicles – vintage designs, buses, double decker buses for AP Tourism and some vintage buses in Mumbai. I have designed for IOC, Coca Cola, Essel World in Mumbai. On special requests, I am forced to design buses and cars for film stars and politicians during their election campaigns. I don’t sell any of my cars”.
How much time does he spend on this hobby?
“About 8 hrs everyday.”
Your family…
